Introducing
the most destructive termites of all, subterranean termites.
They
are not known as “silent destroyers” for nothing, these termites can chew
through wallpaper like nothing.
The picture above shows a woman who was unlucky to have savings she accumulated with her husband over the past 3 years ravaged by these pests. Cases like these are actually very common.
Their
favourable conditions are moist and dark areas, under the bed would be
paradise. To protect themselves from open-air and make the area even darker,
they would build distinctive tunnels, often referred to as “mud tubes,” to
reach food sources. It would explain the mud found on the metal case where the
money was stored. Using their small saw-toothed jaws, they chew away and move
any materials 24 hours a day, seven days a week, biting off small fragments of any
material, one piece at a time.
It
is important to be alert of any areas near the homes’ foundation where water
accumulates as these pests are attracted to moisture. Ensure there is enough
ventilation circulating indoors to reduce humidity. Check and seal cracks and
in your home’s foundation to keep termites from coming in.
As
subterranean termites are known to be the most destructive, no amount of DIY
remedies would curb a subterranean termite infestation than professional pest
control services, unfortunately.
